Our fourth grade students recently had the opportunity to explore Utah’s unique wetland ecosystems during a field trip to Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve and USU Wetlands Discovery Point as part of the Wings and Water Wetland Education program. At the preserve, students focused on observing birds that call the wetlands home, learning how these species depend on the habitat for food, shelter, and migration. With binoculars in hand, they were excited to spot and learn about a variety of bird species found in the area.
At the Wetlands Discovery Point, students expanded their learning by exploring wetland plants and animals while also diving into the science of the water cycle. They became hands-on investigators by examining aquatic insects, discovering how certain bugs thrive in clean water while others are more commonly found in contaminated environments. This engaging, real-world experience brought science to life and helped deepen students’ understanding of ecosystems and their appreciation for the natural world.
